The Cichlid Africa group includes species of cichlids that originate from Africa. Fish in this group has been divided based on their place of origin, like Lake Malawi, or Lake Tanganyika. Cichlids from lake Malawi are subdivided based on their distribution in lake Malawi. Mbuna cichlids live on the rocky shores of Lake Malawi. Utaka cichlids live in the open waters or sandy shores. Species from the genus Aulonocara can be found in the transition zone from rocks to sand.
